Those found working without a valid visa, or on an expired one, should be deported, and their employers should face strict fines, with mandatory checks enforced regularly. A specialized task force combining RCMP, CSIS, CBSA, Public Safety, and local law enforcement should be established to locate, arrest, and deport illegal immigrants on a provincial level, similar to ICE. To enhance border security, a 100-meter-wide clearance on either side of the rural border should be maintained, with marked posts like those in Lloydminster for Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. Surveillance should be increased with drones and motion detectors, working in coordination with specialized law enforcement units to track and arrest illegal entrants. Canadians who harbor or assist illegal immigrants should face heavy fines, with significant investments directed toward national security measures. In your message of May 2, 2025, you express concern about candidate nominations in the electoral district of Carleton.
Elections Canada is the independent agency responsible for the conduct of federal elections and referendums. We administer the Canada Elections Act (the Act) as adopted by Parliament. Elections Canada does not conduct enforcement activities, such as investigations or the prosecution of offences.
The Act does not limit the number of candidates who may run in a given electoral district. Any potential candidate that fulfills all the conditions for candidacy outlined in the Act will have their name included on the ballot. Only Canadian citizens aged 18 or older are eligible to run as candidates. In addition, please note the Act does not prohibit an individual from serving as the official agent for more than one candidate. Additional information on the rules governing official agents can be found here.
Any changes to these provisions would require an act of Parliament. Any person who wishes to have legislation enacted or changed may contact the member of Parliament for their electoral district or the Leader of the Government in the House of Commons.
Note that the Chief Electoral Officer has previously outlined his concerns about the impact that an unusually high number of candidates may have on the accessibility of the ballot. These concerns were shared with the House of Commons’ Standing Committee on Procedure and House Affairs, and the submission can be found here.
Regarding elector signatures collected consenting to candidacy, when a prospective candidate submits their nomination package the returning officer verifies that all of the signatures are those of electors qualified to vote in the electoral district where the prospective candidate wants to run. An elector’s signature will not be counted if their address is located outside of the electoral district, or if the elector’s name is omitted or unreadable. It will also not be counted if a name other than the prospective candidate's name is at the top of all signature pages, or if a witness did not sign the page. An elector may sign and consent to the candidacy of more than one prospective candidate.
The returning officer of the electoral district of Carleton confirmed that the candidates in the 45th general election met the eligibility requirements under the Act.
Please note that potential candidates do not have to pay a deposit when submitting their nomination papers. The amendments to the Act made on June 13, 2019, removed a previous requirement for potential candidates to pay a refundable deposit of $1,000 to the returning officer, as part of their nomination requirements.
