Paranormal Research & Investigating Equipment
Equipment used by Paranormal Investigators, Researchers and historians alike. Our lead researcher and investigator Kevin has added his comments on each of the items below. Prices are estimates (excluding shipping/import), in Canadian dollars, November 2021.
There are a couple great companies in the US offering equipment at reasonable prices. My resource for this page is GhostStop.
Do not buy from Paranormal Electronics Ltd (in the UK and now with a US affiliate, see A Nickle's Worth under About Us).
Remember when considering price remember to include exchange rate, shipping costs and import fees. It is important to research the company you are dealing with using the BBB and TrustPilot (though the latter can be manipulated in the same way Amazon reviews can). When you read reviews on companies and products read the 1,2,3 star reviews first but take each with a grain of salt.
This entire page is ADVICE ONLY.
* most commonly used, for very low budget the ovilus and spirit box are available in APP stores on your phone.

INEXPENSIVE BUT MAY ONLY BE ACCESSORIES OF OTHER EQUIPMENT
Dowsing Rods - used to detect water and some have used them to illicit responses from spirits through movement of the rods, common materials used copper and brass. I've used these a few times, however, I find them to be significantly influenced by how you hold them in your fingers. I don't find them to be overly reliable or accurate. I have used wire coat-hangers cut up into rods to detect water before though, probably the only thing these are really good for. If you are very low tech and just starting out they're affordable but you'd be wiser to spend the money on batteries than dowsing rods.
* Infrared (IR) & Night Vision - used to see differences in light and dark shadows at night, illuminates darkness. I haven't used this myself, yet, but I can see some benefits to it on the paranormal investigations I have watched on YouTube. The only thing I would consider is the risks you take using these as your only source of light in unfamiliar or risky settings (such as abandoned buildings). This is why it is very important to do a walk-thru the location while it is still daylight (or with a lot of illumination at night) to see the hazards like rotting floors or collapsing walls. The cost for one light bank is about $100, GhostStop carries one, or Amazon.
Rechargeable Battery Pack - commonly used to charge smartphones in remote locations they can be used to power lights and cameras. Just remember to turn your smartphone to Airplane mode or it will affect EMF equipment like the K2 and you will get false readings. If you are just starting out you'll be inclined to use regular disposable batteries but an investment in rechargeable ones (for cameras, K2s, rempods, etc) will save you thousands in the long run. The cost for one battery bank (portable charger) with significant Ah is about $50, you can get these at Walmart.
Tripod - used to hold a camera or lighting. These can be found at most mass merchandisers, like Walmart, or online Amazon for around $50. It's better to buy these new, investing a bit more money now will prevent an upset that could damage your camera worth hundreds. I would get both full sized ones and small table-top ones. If you are just starting out get one of each.
* Handheld Gimbal Stabilizer - used to hold a smartphone (steady and away from your hand). There is an increasing variety of these on the market, both in mass merchandisers and online. You can get a basic one that just holds your phone (about $50) up to a more fancy model that allows you to take pictures and swivel the head of the device with the touch of buttons on the handle (about $100+). I have a couple of the basic ones.
Prayer - free to offer and can't hurt, though recommended to perform off camera (before and after an investigation). It doesn't hurt to carry a copy of the Bible, Quran or whatever with you in the car, in case you or a member of your team would like to refer to it. I personally am a Pantheist, but I have a Bible I received years ago and I'll say a small affirmation before conducting an investigation. It's good to remind any spirits or ghosts who might be present at the location, at the start of the investigation, of your intentions and your limits (not allowing them to touch you, attach to you, or follow you home). This reminder should take place at the end of your investigation as well, just in case.

AMATEUR LEVEL LEAST EXPENSE
* Digital Voice Recorder (DVR) - used for capturing Electronic Voice Phenomena (EVP). There are many models of digital recorders on the market today but a good cliché to remember is "you get what you pay for". If you save a few bucks and you a $30 recorder vs a $75 recorder you will get cheaper sound quality and playback. I know because I did this very thing with the purchase of my first recorder. All of my recordings on it have an almost heartbeat rhythm in the background of most of the recordings. You can get used to these imperfections but they affect the legitimacy and accuracy of your scientific investigation findings. I would suggest purchasing a recorder from Sony or Olympus. I have seen one at Walmart for about $50 that many Paranormal Investigators use. Another thing you will need to buy is a small speaker to plug into the headphone jack, while some speakers on recorders are decent they are usually not loud enough. Use the noise cancelling option on the device. Some investigators will tell you this is wrong because it might filter out spirits but your intention here is to catch a Class A or B EVP so you want clear loud responses not static that could be mis-interpreted as voices or familiar sounds by your brain.
* K2 Meter - used to detect electromagnetic energy. An excellent amateur ghost hunting tool used by investigators just starting out and professionals alike. These are widely available in different styles that do different things but you'll want, at least, a basic black K-II meter. You can find these on Amazon for about $40.
* Static Camera - is a camera which is not moving, usually left to monitor areas while investigators check out other rooms. As you develop as an Investigator you may explore larger locations, and as the saying goes "you can't be in two places at once". Well, with a static camera you can. While you explore the location you can set up a static camera on a tripod in a room, such as a basement or kitchen, while you explore another floor or room of the building. Remember if you are exploring at night your static camera should have an IR light and the ability to record in night-vision. When you really become established you'll have these cameras wired up to a central location (your "nerve center"), but for now, keep it simple. You can get a cheap 1080p/16GB camera for about $130 these days, SD cards are cheap at Walmart.
Pendulum - used to detect energy or illicit responses from spirits through movement of the pendulum. Pendulums may have a copper, brass, or crystal weight at the end of a string or tiny chain. There are stands designed to hold the pendulum chain. If you are going to be stationary in a room, using a pendulum, a small stand is good to have in order to keep the pendulum stable and illicit more accurate scientific results. If you are holding the chain and don't have a very steady hand you could manipulate its' movement subconsciously.
Candles & Crystals - used by some investigators to illicit responses from spirits and/or channel energies. The best advice is two fold - do not leave candle unattended, and, know your environment. If you are in a mining tunnel, for example, you don't want an exposed flame in case there are gases lurking about. If you are in an old abandoned location such as an asylum a candle could ignite building materials. Just like in your home candles should only be used in your presence and away from flammable materials. Crystals are safe to use in any environment, however, each crystal has a different vibrational level and purpose, know your crystals beforehand and only use ones that make sense for your investigation. Taking a bag of random crystals and just pouring them out on the floor will only make you look silly. Crystals tend to only be used by individuals who can "listen" to the stone and understand the responses from it, however, some people wear crystals for protection. Again, know your crystals, you don't want to wear one that attracts psychic energy if you're trying to repel it.
Sage - Smudging, or other rites involving the burning of sacred herbs or resins, both as a rite/offering and a repelling of spirits. The smell of sage burning can be very nice or revolting to people. Burning sage is akin to lighting a cigar to some people. Know your audience. If you are in someone's home or workplace you must obtain their permission to burn sage. If they don't know what it smells like try burning it a little outside first. The smell tends to linger, especially in homes with little natural air-flow (newer homes). Sage is a great way to purify your home of any linger spirits or poltergeists you might bring home from investigations. If you are going to do a lot of investigating you should get comfortable with the smell of burning sage.
Flashlight (Torch) - used to illicit responses from spirits (the key being loosely closed flashlight housing). This one has been more popular in investigations in the past couple years though the science of it remains questionable. The tightening or loosening of the housing is subjective and open to manipulation by the investigator. That being said I have seen some intriguing and direct responses at investigations from the turning on/off of the light. It remains a "newer" tool in the investigators kit that warrants further research. A $2 flashlight from the Dollar store will work just as well as a $50 one, the importance is the ability to unscrew the lamp housing from the battery tube allowing for only a minute contact between battery and bulb housing. This light contact is said to be manipulated by a poltergeist, increasing or decreasing the contact between the two points.

MID LEVEL MODERATE EXPENSE
* P-SB-7 Spirit Box - uses radio frequencies and white noise as a medium for spirits to speak to living. The SB-7 (SB-7T) can be substituted with the SB-11 or the SBox Ghost Scanner (red/black model) will cost about $120. An SB-7T will cost about $105, an SB-11 about $300. The SB-11 will detect changes in temperature. The most common one used by investigators currently rivals between the SB-7T and the SBox, both are equally good for amateurs and professionals alike. Another version of the SB-11 is the EDI Meter (commonly orange/black in colour), both take similar readings.
* Ovilus (this can be a number of different names but like Tylenol, Ovilus is used to describe them all generically instead of being 'brand specific')- uses a large dictionary of words to communicate (translates electrical impulses into speech). The greatest opposing view to the use and accuracy of an Ovilus is this. First, when you are in a country where English is not the common language you have to question how a ghost or spirit would know which English words to choose to respond to you. Second, how does a ghost "see" what words the Ovilus knows and picks one? Third, in regards to APPs, there is a mistrust by the more established investigators (usually with good reason) that the Ovilus is responding in a way the investigator wants it to not by any manipulation by a spirit. In order to remain scientific one must take ovilus responses 'with a grain of salt' and see them as reactions to changes in the electrical field in the room rather than intelligent responses by an unseen spirit or entity.
Temperature scanner gun (aka Thermal reader) - various designs, used to detect ambient and specific temperature variances. A basic laser guided model will run about $100, an advanced model that includes a visual display of heat/cold signatures and their specific temperatures will cost over $700 for a decent model. You don't need to advanced expensive model, a basic one that shows a change in the temperature of a room or person will usually suffice. Don't settle for a $20 off these 'budget' services like Wish, spend a bit more and get one from Amazon. Look for a gun that reads room temperature not just body temperature.
Haunted Doll or object - sometimes the presence of a haunted doll or object can motivate spirits present in the room to react. A doll can trigger the response from a spirit AND a doll can act as a vessel for a spirit. Know the risk ahead of time, you could end up taking a spirit or poltergeist home with you. I own two "haunted dolls" personally, one purchased off EBay (Ashlynn) and the other from a charity store (Lilly). Ashlynn has become more active in recent months communicating to me by triggering a cat ball I've placed in her lap. I've also noticed her eyes shifting from side to side, I'm not sure if she's looking around the room or this is an effect caused by her energy moving within the doll. I don't think it's just my imagination though or a trick of the light. The doll is not the spirit, the spirit is connected to the doll. It's not like Chucky, some spirit is not trapped inside a doll seeing the world through its' doll eyes. The spirit can leave the doll (unless it's been ritually bound to it, and that's not a doll you want in your house) but remains attached to it for, I believe, a sort of grounding. Imagine you don't have a body and you are just in the ether, you'd want a vessel to "live in" and keep you all in "one piece" so to speak, much as your physical body does for your soul. The doll has become the physical body for this spirit (soul).
Music Box - trigger object used to motivate spirits to react (remember to choose period music (piano, classical, old time music) as some spirits may be offended by modern or "the devil's music". These are becoming more popular. A common model has a motion sensor that points in a range of one direction and some can be set to a certain distance. It basically detects movement past the sensor which can be electromagnetic or a physical body. Manipulate the sensor and you trigger the music playing or stopping. It is a good device to place in a hallway or room you are not near as your movement or light can inadvertently trigger the sensor giving you a false reading.
EM Pump (Electro-Magnetic Pump) - used to create artificial electro-magnetic energy in an attempt to draw in paranormal entities. The drawback to using the pump is that it renders the responses for EMF meters like the K2 or Mel Meter inaccurate with the presence of man-made electro-magnetic fields in the room. I personally do not like the ones on the market today. They operate much like a wifi extender projecting EMF into a room which will create false readings on equipment like K2 meters. I guess one could run one of these devices on a different floor and then turn it off when you go to investigate that space but then how do you know if your readings are that of spirits or residual energy from the device? I think there's a better way to design this device but I'm not mechanically minded to create a prototype. The belief is that spirits need to draw energy from equipment (particularly batteries) to have the strength to communicate and I don't think just dumping raw EMF into a room is the best way to do this.
Flux 2 Response (the Yes/No Pyramid) - used to get direct responses from a paranormal entity. With this device you may be able to detect EMF within physical range of the device and illicit direct responses from an entity by asking very specific Yes/No questions. "Are you here?" "Is that you that just threw a rock?" "Are you a male?" "Are you a child?" and so on. Remember that a question like "Are you a male, or female?" is not a Yes/No response. The device manufacturers claim a Green (Yes) response can be used to detect a Female, and Red (No) a Male but I have my doubts on this one (for now). It's better to just stick to Yes/No for straight-forward unchallenged responses. You can get one of these Flux 2 Pyramids for about $250.
REM Pod - used to detect EMF and temperature fluctuations these pods are equiped with a telescopic antenna. The best way to understand how one of these devices works is to watch a video about a theremin. Unlike the teremin the REM Pod has a single antenna for detecting a change in the environment immediate to the device. A REM Pod should run about $225-250, if you pay $300+ you are paying too much. I have seen them listed on GhostStop for $250 and the exact same model on Amazon for $400. Buyer Beware. I like the REM Pod but there's no way I can afford them at this time.

HIGH LEVEL INVESTED EXPENSE
SLS Camera (Kinect camera system) - used to target and map unseen entities (expensive but appears to work at mapping figures). I personally don't think you need to spend $300+ on one to achieve the same results you can get from a free phone APP. The problem with the SLS Camera is the time it takes to set it up and reset it when it frequently crashes (that's Windows for you). An SLS camera is only effective in locations where the field is not contaminated by objects that will trigger the sensor (these include but are not limited to: railings on stairs, wooden rocking chairs, dolls, mannequins, bed frames, anything with an internal wire frame, people, etc). I don't think they are worth the cost personally.

PROFESSIONALS AND KNOWLEDGEABLE USE ONLY HIGHER RISK
Ouija Board - device used to communicate with unseen and dead entities (not recommended for amateurs). I own one but I've only used it once with no result. I'm divided on the effectiveness of these but I am adament that you "communicate" with a Ouija board you do not "play" with one. I think any tool that is used to open a gateway between this dimension and the next should be used with knowledge and caution.
Mirror - device used to provide a portal between the spirit and living world (not recommended for amateurs). I don't like mirrors. I have a small one in my bedroom because I need it to put eye-drops in my eyes, and I have one in the bathroom otherwise I don't like having them around. I will cover a mirror if I have no control over its' placement in my personal space. I believe mirrors are sometimes, not always, portals and can be mis-used.
Dybbuk - A dybbuk is a malicious spirit of possession that is believed to be the dislocated soul of a dead person. The opening of a dybbuk box releases a captured soul which possesses another individual or haunts the location of its' release as a violent poltergeist. Do not mess with a dybbuk box. (definitely not recommended for amateurs). Don't buy one, don't possess one, don't open one ever. That is all. If someone is in possession of one or opens one contact a rabbi immediately.
Voodoo (Vodou) Doll - do not mess with a voodoo doll. (not recommended for amateurs). A "haunted doll" is not a voodoo doll. A toy voodoo doll bought at the Dollar store is not a real voodoo doll. It is a toy.
